White to off-white powder. HYGROSCOPIC. Broad-spectrum cell culture antibiotic that is nontoxic to viruses and mammalian cells at antibacterial and antimycoplasmal concentrations. Its extended stability and slow development of bacterial resistance allow long-term virus and tissue culture studies. Composed of three closely related components: gentamycin C1, C1a, and C2. Reduces sphingomyelinase activity in fibroblasts. M.W. refers to C2 free base form. Activity: ≥ 590 I.U./mg (anhydrous basis). Autoclavable. Stable over a wide pH range at 37°C for up to 15 days. RTECS LY2625000, CAS 1405-41-0. M.W. 463.0 (C2, free base). Merck Index: 14, 4392 Ref.: Montenez, J.P., et al. 1994. Toxicol. Lett. 73, 201. R: 42/43; S: 22-36/37-45 |
