White solid. Antibiotic effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Often used in culture media to control growth of microorganisms. Inhibits initiation, elongation, and termination of protein synthesis in prokaryotes and induces misreading of the genetic code. Activity: ≥700 U/mg. RTECS WK4990000, CAS 3810-74-0.
